What is SEO? (and how it works)

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. In plain English, it's the work of getting your website found on Google by the people already looking for what you do. That's the whole idea. Everything else is detail.

How it works, without the jargon

Google's job is to answer questions. Someone types what they need, and Google tries to hand them the best answer it can find. SEO is simply the work of making your website that best answer — so you're the one it hands over.

It comes down to three things. Can Google read your site? — is it quick, does it work on a phone, is it built tidily enough that Google can make sense of it. Do you have the answer they want? — pages that genuinely cover what people are searching for, written in the words they'd actually use. Do others vouch for you? — links from other sites, honest reviews, a complete Google Business Profile, all the signals that say you're the real thing. Get those three right and you climb. That's it.

Why it matters

Because search reaches people at the exact moment they want what you sell — which is why being found turns into being hired. We've written more on why your business needs SEO and whether it's worth it, if you want the honest case either way.

Local search is its own thing

For most small businesses, the version that matters most is local — turning up when someone nearby searches for what you do. It's often the quickest win, and it's where a lot of enquiries actually come from.

Can you do it yourself, or do you need help?

A fair bit you can do yourself — and we'll always tell you which bits. Where it's worth bringing in an SEO agency is the harder, slower, technical end, and the time it takes. If you'd like to know what it would cost, we've been plain about that too.

The one honest caveat

SEO is a long game. Anyone promising the top of Google by next week is overselling. But it's a long game that compounds — steady, owned, and cheaper the longer you do it. Few kinds of marketing can say that.
